The Directorate of Pension, Provident Fund & Group Insurance (DPPG) came into being in the year 1983 vide Finance Department’s Notification No.11169-F dated 16.09.1983. Initially this Directorate used to deal with Municipal Pension cases only. Later, with the passage of time, the Pension cases of employees of Non-Govt. State aided Educational Institutions, three tier Panchayati Raj system, Municipalities and Municipal Corporations and other aided Organisations/ Institutions like Khadi & Village Industries Board, West Bengal Higher Secondary Council, West Bengal Pollution Control Board, West Bengal College Service Commission, West Bengal Social Welfare Board etc. have come under the ambit of this Directorate. This is worthy of mention that first School Pension Payment Order was issued on 07.12.1985. This Directorate was also entrusted with the task of determination & allotment of operator-wise Interest on Provident Fund balances of Non-Government Institutions under Head of Account 8336-00-800-Other Deposits (PF).

The Government has set up a new branch office of Directorate of Pension, Provident Fund & Group Insurance (DPPG) at UTTARKANYA in 2014 for disposing all pension cases of the pensioners from the districts of North Bengal starting from Malda northwards. Recently, they have been assigned to work on NGIPF module for North Bengal districts.
